Denver, Colo. (May 19, 2022) – Transitional Energy — a majority women-owned, Indigenous-led geothermal technology and development company that turns oil and gas waste streams into renewable energy — today announced it has successfully generated electricity at an oil field in Nevada. Transitional Energy raised 100 percent of the capital for the initial pilot, making it the first company to produce geothermal energy at an oil site using private funding. The field where the pilot is taking place will be part of a larger project later this year using Transitional Energy technology and funded by a U.S. Department of Energy Geothermal Technologies Office Wells of Opportunity grant.
Leveraging the team’s oil and gas heritage, proprietary technology and innovative processes, Transitional Energy generated the renewable electricity from an oil and gas well operated by Grant Canyon Oil and Gas LLC. The energy is used to power a portion of Grant Canyon’s operations at the oil field, reducing total greenhouse gas emissions from their operations.
“It’s exciting to see the success of this pilot project, as it opens up a world of untapped possibility for geothermal energy development in the United States,” said Salina Derichsweiler, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Transitional Energy. “Just as the world is on a journey to a cleaner energy future, so are we. Transitional Energy’s initial goal with this pilot was to prove we could produce geothermal energy at an oil and gas site, and we’ve accomplished that. Next up is to optimize our operations for even greater results and scale them to provide an immediate solution that helps bridge the gap between fossil fuels and intermittent renewable energy.”
In addition to working closely with Grant Canyon Oil and Gas, Transitional Energy is collaborating with ElectraTherm, an Atlanta-based global leader in engineering low temperature waste heat recovery solutions.
“We are thrilled with the results of this pilot project and happy to see the success of our geothermal equipment,” said Matt Lish, Managing Director at ElectraTherm. “We look forward to working with Transitional Energy to bring this technology to the oil and gas industry and further our shared goal of reducing carbon emissions and increasing availability of baseload, renewable energy.”
Transitional Energy’s approach permits the company to develop geothermal energy in lower-temperature zones, unlike traditional geothermal development, which is restricted to hot spots in the Western U.S. The low-temperature capability, combined with its low-capital approach by leveraging completed, operational and abandoned oil and gas wells to create a hybrid energy source, makes deployment opportunities more cost-effective and abundant than traditional geothermal energy development, while helping oil and gas operators reduce their carbon footprint and generating renewable baseload energy for the grid.
Transitional Energy’s mission is to provide affordable and abundant energy that bridges the gap between fossil fuels and renewable energy. It has identified more than 1 million wellbores in the United States that have geothermal development capabilities.

February 16, 2022, [Denver, Colorado and Brighton, Colorado] – Transitional Energy, a geothermal development company, joined Brighton-based United Power to announce that they have signed a Letter of Intent to develop a dispatchable energy pilot program. The program will focus on geothermal resources from oil and gas operations located in the electric cooperative’s service territory.
United Power provides electric service to multiple oil and gas operations in Colorado’s DJ Oil Basin. Transitional Energy’s program will use geothermal energy to generate dispatchable baseload electric power. The program may be used with both operational and abandoned wells to capture and convert what would otherwise be waste geothermal energy to electricity.
Many oil and gas operators use traditional electric service to power drilling rigs and other well pad equipment. Through this partnership, United Power and Transitional Energy will be able to provide a unique solution that can convert oil and gas operations using traditional electric service to facilities powered by up to 100% geothermal resources. Owner-operators of wells in the United Power service territory would work directly with Transitional Energy to utilize the technology to offset their energy purchases while reducing their greenhouse gas footprint.
Transitional Energy was founded in Colorado and is partially funded by a grant from the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. Taking advantage of the team’s oil and gas expertise as well as emerging advancements in Organic Rankine Cycle technology for heat recovery, Transitional Energy will tap into the geothermal potential of thousands of wellbores within the DJ Basin. Reuse of existing wells and infrastructure is a capital-efficient way to use the heat beneath our feet. This pilot program compliments the many innovative energy investments United Power has made in renewable energy projects in its territory.
“United Power is excited to work on this innovative pilot project,” stated Dean Hubbuck, United Power’s Chief Energy Resources Officer. “Utilizing clean, economical geothermal energy to provide local power that can be dispatched when needed is a critical component of our growing energy portfolio. Geothermal energy represents a huge untapped renewable resource that can reduce our reliance on power from other traditional sources.”

January 14, 2022, [Denver, Colorado] – Transitional Energy, a geothermal development company, announced that it was selected to receive a $2,500,000 award from the U.S. Department of Energy Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) to support the transition of hydrocarbon wells into geothermal wells, helping to advance the Biden-Harris Administration’s goals of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 and a carbon-free grid by 2035. This project will install state-of-the-art, American-made geothermal heat engines at Blackburn Oilfield in Nevada for electrical power production.
The goal of the project is to generate up to 1MW of renewable, baseload power from an operating oil field located in Nevada. The power will be used to replace diesel generation and grid power to operate the field and lower total greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, electric vehicle charging stations will be installed to help with filling the gaps in rural, disadvantaged, and hard-to-reach locations.
“We are excited to be working with Transitional Energy. They are a group of forward-thinking professionals who understand the need and efficiency of integrating geothermal with hydrocarbons.” said Michael O’Neal, President of Grant Canyon Oil & Gas. “We look forward to implementing this innovative technology to cut our electrical costs, increase the production and extend the life of our assets. Our EOR projects in Nevada move a significant amount of water, so we are delighted to be a part of enhancing the beneficial use of this water. We believe that this project with Transitional will possibly develop into several projects as we move forward and will mesh well with our ESG goals.”
The successful pilot of oilfield geothermal at Blackburn field will build a roadmap for co-production and oilfield transition to baseload, renewable power. Reuse of existing wells and infrastructure is a capital-efficient opportunity to use the heat beneath our feet for the common good. This is particularly advantageous for hitting federal, municipal, and utility-based renewable energy portfolio goals and providing local renewable power for electric vehicle charging infrastructure, particularly in rural areas.
“With key partners Grant Canyon Oil & Gas, Electratherm, and the National Renewable Energy Lab, this project will be the a great demonstration of the thermal potential of oil and gas wells for power generation,” said Johanna Ostrum, Chief Operating Officer, Transitional Energy LLC.
GTO selected Transitional Energy as a part of its efforts to generate clean, renewable geothermal energy from existing idle or unproductive hydrocarbon wells. Through this work, Transitional Energy will help untap the potential of geothermal energy.
Reusing orphan and end-of-life wells for geothermal heat and power involves the same skill sets that current oil and gas professionals, whether in the office or in the field, and whether that’s in the subsurface or on surface in wellbores and facilities. The adaptation of wells to geothermal use can provide a just transition for a highly skilled workforce that would otherwise need to find more indirect applications for their skills—and keep that expertise local.
