Darcy Partners Geothermal Event
May 9, 2023
Geothermal energy as we know it today has been around for more than 100 years. For this type of renewable energy, hot water / brine naturally emerge from the subsurface at high temperatures that we can harness to produce electricity. This type of energy is limited to areas where there is high tectonic activity like the Ring of Fire in the west coast of North America.
With the increasing need to look for clean energy systems, solar and wind energy have emerged as clear leaders, but both face one common problem: high variability and weather dependence. That is to say, they are sources of energy that rely on energy storage to provide baseload power, if available.
Combining these two aspects, experts in the energy industry have begun to look at new sources of geothermal as their new solution for baseload, clean power. Unconventional geothermal emerged as the proposed technology to harness the subsurface heat in areas where this doesn't occur naturally by combining geothermal and O&G E&P knowledge. From this, a number of companies emerged proposing 2 different solutions:
- Advanced Geothermal Systems (using closed loop)
- Enhanced Geothermal Systems (using open loop)
A Partnership Between Industry Experts to Convert Heat Waste to Power in the Oil and Gas Industry
September 28, 2022, [Denver, Colorado] Transitional Energy, a geothermal technology and development company, and Georgia-based ElectraTherm, Inc. announce that they have signed a Letter of Intent to partner to convert heat waste to power in the oil and gas industry. This announcement builds upon the successful pilot operation of Transitional Energy's Sedna Sled Geothermal System earlier this year at an oilfield located in rural Nevada. That system included ElectraTherm's Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) equipment.
Transitional Energy was awarded the Emerging Cleantech Company of 2020 by the Colorado Cleantech Industries Association.
